NASA has unveiled the "quiet" supersonic jet X-59 QueSST. Video
After several years of development, NASA and Lockheed Martin have unveiled the completed version of the X-59 supersonic jet.
It is capable of breaking the sound barrier without the loud roar typically associated with aircraft reaching supersonic speed. Instead, the aircraft will produce a soft sound, akin to that of a car door closing. This jet has the potential to revolutionize supersonic flight and aviation as a whole.
The unveiling of the new X-59 supersonic aircraft occurred at the Lockheed Martin facility in California. As the audience laid eyes on the aircraft's elongated nose, they immediately noticed the absence of a front window, a distinctive feature of the X-59.
The omission of a front window serves to mitigate the sonic impact generated by the aircraft. In place of a window, the aircraft is outfitted with the eXternal Vision system, comprising a camera and a cockpit display screen that produces an augmented reality effect, enabling pilots to see the area in front of the aircraft.
Representatives from Lockheed Martin stated that their collaboration with NASA heralds a new era of "quiet" supersonic flights.
Currently, preparations are underway for the X-59's inaugural flight, scheduled to occur over residential areas in the United States.
