Nanyang Technological University in Singapore is implementing an entrance fee for tourists
Crowds of curious tourists are causing headaches for students at Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore.
To reduce the number of curious visitors, loud voices echoing in classrooms, and traffic congestion, NTU is now charging an entrance fee, as reported by Scmp.com.
In recent weeks, students from NTU and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have used the online forum Reddit to voice their complaints about the inconvenience they feel has been caused by tourists.
Chief among them are the long, winding lines at the dining halls during lunchtime, loud voices echoing in the common study areas, which are distracting, and congestion caused by tourist buses picking up, dropping off, and waiting for tourists.
NTU students also mentioned being distracted by tourists taking pictures and looking over their shoulders at The Hive building, whose facade is known for its resemblance to stacked dim sum baskets.
Some tourists even entered classrooms during lessons.
NTU announced on February 1 that all travel agencies planning campus tours must first obtain permission from the university.
Tour groups will also be required to pre-register online and schedule visits in advance.
An entrance fee will also be charged, which the university says is intended to support campus maintenance and traffic control.
As TravelWise previously reported, Singapore Airlines (SIA) is preparing to return to the Belgian capital Brussels in 2024. Direct flights will be launched next spring on April 5.
