London is the most vulnerable city in the world to aviation air pollution - study
Airplanes taking off and landing at London's six airports annually emit the equivalent of 3.23 million cars' worth of harmful nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. In Tokyo and Dubai, residents are exposed to the equivalent of 2.78 million car emissions from air transport.
According to new research tracking air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from cargo and passenger flights from airports around the world, these three cities are the most affected by aviation air pollution in the world, The Guardian reports.
The 20 largest airports combined were found to produce as much carbon emissions as 58 coal-fired power plants.
"The level of pollution around airports is increasing every year," said Jo Dardenne, director of aviation at Transport and Environment, a think tank that helped conduct the study. "This affects millions of people who breathe in toxic emissions and develop health problems as a result, but politicians are hiding the problem."
As TravelWise reported, Some tourists may think that traveling to London may require time and careful preparation, but if you know how and where to save money, the city can show you even more without taking your money.
