In Japan, a Filipino was mistakenly detained due to an "expired visa": details
A 30-year-old Filipino man, who was in the process of extending his residence permit in Japan, was mistakenly arrested by Tokyo police for allegedly overstaying his visa. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 2, at Ueno Station.
A police officer approached the man and requested to see his documents. According to the police, his residence permit had expired, and he mentioned that he "forgot to apply," as reported by Japan Today.
Despite the man voluntarily going to the police station and providing all the necessary information, he was still arrested.
Only an hour after the arrest, the police acknowledged their mistake and released the man, apologizing for the wrongful detention.
The misunderstanding occurred because the information regarding the visa extension had not been updated on the man's card, presumably because he had applied online.
Reportedly, the Immigration Services Agency confirmed that the Filipino was indeed in the process of extending his residence permit. Therefore, according to the country's laws, his stay in Japan was lawful.
