In Buenos Aires, protests took place against the increase in metro fares
In the Argentine capital, students jumped over turnstiles at train and subway stations to protest. In this way, Buenos Aires students expressed their opposition to the transportation fare increase imposed by the government of Javier Millais.
The protests took place at Plaza Miserere, Constitución, and Retiro train stations, as well as in La Plata. It is noted that the significant increase in travel fares by 251% will exacerbate the dropout rate among thousands of students across the country, according to EFE Agencia.
Overall, since the beginning of the year, the cost of public transport in Buenos Aires has increased for the second time: in January to 76.92 pesos and in February to 270 pesos. Additionally, the cost of traveling on suburban trains has risen from 37.38 pesos to 48.38 pesos and eventually to 130 pesos, depending on the railway line.
These actions are part of the government's decision to reduce subsidies for energy and public transportation as part of a "shock" plan to achieve fiscal balance this year.
Earlier, TravelWise reported that a wave of strikes by transport sector unions was announced in Europe.
