Hyatt's Opportunity Youth Program Surpasses 5,700 Careers, Signals Significant Achievement
Hyatt celebrates its global RiseHY program, aimed at forging long-term career paths for young individuals in the hospitality sector. Since its inception in 2018, over 5,700 Opportunity Youth* have joined either Hyatt or a Hyatt-affiliated hotel, representing a significant stride towards the company's commitment to hire 10,000 Opportunity Youth by 2025.
In a world where over 23% of young people are unemployed, as per the International Labour Organization, investing in underserved communities has gained paramount importance. Despite grappling with unprecedented challenges in the job market due to the pandemic, Hyatt remains steadfast in its dedication to supporting Opportunity Youth globally.
"The RiseHY program empowers thousands of young individuals worldwide to embark on rewarding careers in hospitality," stated Malaika Myers, Chief Human Resources Officer at Hyatt Hotels Corporation. "By focusing on Opportunity Youth, Hyatt actualizes its purpose of care, creating economic avenues for individuals in under-resourced communities, while also addressing staffing shortages and turnover challenges in the hospitality industry."
To date, more than 400 hotels across 65 countries have backed RiseHY participants, known as RiseHYers. The program emphasizes not only recruitment but also retention by facilitating access to new job opportunities and skills training conducive to establishing enduring careers in hospitality.
Over 40% of those recruited through the RiseHY program remain employed at Hyatt or affiliated hotels. In the U.S., where the hospitality sector faces an average employee turnover rate of 70-80%, compared to the overall industry average of 10-15%, RiseHY has been instrumental in mitigating turnover challenges.
Collaborating with community-based organizations and public-private partners, eligible youth receive vocational training and career placements. Hyatt, along with the Hyatt Hotels Foundation, has contributed over $1 million to 30 nonprofits in the last two years through the Hyatt Community Grant Program.
For instance, partnerships with organizations like the Bali Children Foundation (BCF) have provided opportunities for individuals like Risma, who transitioned from a rural farm upbringing to a career as a Commis Chef at Hyatt Regency Bali through the RiseHY program.
Hyatt's expansion, including initiatives like the Hyatt Inclusive Collection, has broadened opportunities within the hospitality sector. Leveraging innovative technology such as virtual reality experiences and digital skill-matching, Hyatt engages youth effectively.
Additionally, the RiseHY Coach program pairs experienced Hyatt colleagues with RiseHY participants for mentorship, complemented by resources like the Workplace Mentoring Toolkit developed by the Hyatt Hotels Foundation and partners.
