How a well-known cruise company is tackling the issue of towels on loungers, which passengers "reserve" for themselves all day
Carnival Cruise Line is taking steps to combat the widespread problem of poolside "reservations". Passengers on the liner often leave towels in their places, rushing off to the buffet or their rooms, only to return to sunbathe after a while.
However, this is a wrong and unfair approach that annoys other tourists because they lose the opportunity to use the sunbeds. According to the Express, Carnival Cruise Line has devised a way to address such etiquette violations.
The system for preventing the "reservation" of sunbeds is based on stickers. A crew member affixes a label to an unattended deck chair. If it remains empty after 40 minutes, the passenger's belongings are removed and placed in a towel dryer.
John Hield, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line, explained: "If they are not back by then, we will remove it. That's the only way we can do it fairly."
John Hield emphasized that while this system is not perfect, it is currently the most effective way to deal with such situations.
There are various reasons why tourists may need to temporarily leave the pool area. For legitimate reasons such as retrieving forgotten items, making a phone call, engaging in conversations with other passengers, or taking a swim, leaving a towel in place is acceptable. However, "reserving" a seat for the entire day in this manner is considered rude.
