Hong Kong International Airport Retains Title as World's Busiest Cargo Hub
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has once again secured its position as the world's busiest cargo airport for 2023, marking the 13th time in 14 years it has achieved this distinction, according to the Airports Council International (ACI). This ongoing success underscores HKIA's pivotal role in global trade and logistics.
Cathay Cargo, a longstanding pillar of the HKIA community and the city's leading cargo carrier, celebrates this achievement. The airline's Director of Cargo, Tom Owen, expressed pride in the airport's consistent performance, attributing it to the collaborative spirit and innovative practices of the Hong Kong air cargo community. He highlighted the airport's world-class infrastructure and strategic enhancements in the Greater Bay Area that continue to reinforce Hong Kong's status at the forefront of the air cargo industry.
This recognition comes at a significant time for Cathay Cargo, which recently hosted the IATA World Cargo Symposium at HKIA. The event, a major calendar highlight for the air cargo sector, saw record attendance, further cementing HKIA's reputation as a top-tier logistics hub. As host, Cathay Cargo showcased its extensive capabilities and commitment to excellence in the industry.
The airline is not resting on its laurels. In December 2023, Cathay Cargo announced the acquisition of six new Airbus A350F freighters and options for 20 additional aircraft, signaling its confidence in HKIA's long-term potential as a global air cargo leader. Additionally, Cathay Cargo reported a 20% increase in cargo volume in 2023, handling nearly 1.4 million tonnes, illustrating robust growth and a strong rebound in global logistics activities.
This accolade not only reaffirms Hong Kong's leading position in the air freight sector but also highlights the strategic initiatives and investments by stakeholders like Cathay Cargo. Their efforts are crucial in advancing HKIA's capabilities and ensuring that it remains a key player in international trade and logistics. As the industry evolves, HKIA and its partners are well positioned to navigate future challenges and capitalize on new opportunities in the global market.
