Heathrow workers may go on strike on Easter
More than 600 border guards at Heathrow Airport could go on strike over Easter, potentially causing flight delays. However, the worst-case scenario can still be avoided if the employer listens to the union's demands.
The reason for the strike is the proposed changes in working conditions, which the PCS union considers "draconian." According to the Express, the strike ballot will take place from March 1 to 22, 2024, just before Easter travel.
Fran Heathcote, PCS general secretary, said: "Our members at Heathrow are united in their opposition to these draconian plans. One aspect of the plans will force workers to choose between finding another job or losing their allowances, while another will force others to sign up for new, grueling shifts or quit altogether."
The workers are calling on the employer to withdraw the plans to avoid a strike. The next step to resolve the conflict is up to the employer, PCS emphasized.
If the strike takes place, it could affect passengers departing from Heathrow during the Easter holidays, as well as those arriving at Heathrow during this period.
According to the newspaper, shortly before the announcement of a possible strike, Thomas Waldby, the new CEO of Heathrow, expressed plans to reduce the cost of maintaining the London airport.
This plan includes outsourcing some of the airport's security staff.
As previously reported by TravelWise, Brussels Airlines announced the cancellation of 20% of flights due to the strike of flight attendants.
