First Bus Introduces Public Access to Electric Charging
In a pioneering move, First Bus has inaugurated the UK's inaugural bus depot to extend electric charging services to the public. Situated at the purpose-built hub in Cornwall, this innovative initiative offers swift charging solutions for electric cars, with the capability to power up a family vehicle within just 30 minutes.
Representing a substantial investment of £1 million by First Bus, the Summercourt depot now stands as a beacon of accessibility, marking the debut of consumer electric vehicle charging within the bus industry. Nestled strategically along the A30 corridor, a prominent tourist route into Cornwall, the site aims to alleviate EV range concerns for travelers exploring the region.
Moreover, the opening of the Summercourt charging hub signifies a pivotal milestone in fostering the local community's transition towards electric mobility. By facilitating emissions reduction and fostering cleaner air for residents, this venture holds promise for sustainable urban development.
The newly inaugurated hub boasts a user-friendly experience, offering:
Eight rapid chargers
Convenient payment options via contactless credit cards, eliminating the need for apps or sign-ups, priced at 69p/kWh
Rapid charging capabilities of up to 150kW, enabling an 80% charge for an average family car within half an hour
Operational hours from 06:00 to 22:00, seven days a week
On-site amenities including refreshments, restrooms, and a waiting area
The culmination of a 12-month endeavor, the Summercourt project underscores First Bus's commitment to fostering sustainable infrastructure for the community's benefit. Beyond serving individual consumers, the chargers are also available for local businesses, aligning with First Bus's successful model implemented in Glasgow and Leicester.
Malcolm Bell, Executive Chairman of Visit Cornwall, lauded the initiative as a significant enhancement to Cornwall's charging infrastructure, catering not only to locals but also to tourists embarking on longer journeys via the A30.
