East Coast Braces for Severe Winter Disruption: Airlines Cancel Over 1,000 Flights
As the US East Coast prepares for an impending Nor'easter, airlines have preemptively canceled over a thousand flights, with Boston and New York's three main airports facing the brunt of the storm. With significant snowfall expected to start on Tuesday, major travel disruptions are anticipated across the region.
Storm Impact: Cancellations and Delays
FlightAware reports have revealed a staggering number of cancellations: New York LaGuardia (LGA) alone has seen over 400 cancellations today, nearly 40% of its scheduled flights. Similarly, Boston Logan (BOS) and Newark Liberty (EWR) have each canceled over 220 flights, with New York JFK (JFK) scrapping approximately 170 flights. The storm's approach has led airlines to adjust schedules in anticipation of the adverse weather conditions.
Airlines Hardest Hit
Regional carriers such as Republic Airways and Endeavor Air have experienced significant impacts to their schedules. Republic Airways, flying for major airlines like American, Delta, and United, has canceled over 250 flights, nearly 29% of its daily operations. Endeavor Air follows closely with over 180 cancellations, constituting 32% of its schedule. JetBlue, too, has significantly reduced its operations, with over 150 cancellations, affecting 19% of its schedule. Other major carriers, including United, Southwest, Delta, Spirit, and American, have also canceled scores of flights in response to the storm warning.
Travel Alerts and Flexible Rebooking Options
Airlines have issued travel alerts for affected hubs, offering travelers increased flexibility for rebooking. Passengers affected by cancellations are entitled to a full refund or the option to rebook their flights. Both airlines and airports are advising passengers to prepare for disruptions and to check their flight status regularly.
Ongoing and Expected Disruptions
While the heaviest impact of the storm is expected on Tuesday, disruptions are likely to extend into Wednesday as airlines work to restore normal operations. There is also a possibility that the storm could linger, causing further delays and operational challenges into Wednesday morning.
Travelers are advised to stay informed and consider alternative travel arrangements where possible, as the situation continues to evolve.
