Due to the implementation of environmental initiatives, Heathrow Airport is losing its capacity
Due to the inability to expand, Heathrow Airport risks losing its status as a global transportation hub to competitive airports in the Middle East. This was stated by Paul Griffiths, former managing director of Gatwick Airport and CEO of Dubai Airports.
According to Griffiths, the problem may lie in the endless debate about the future third runway, which cannot be built due to concerns about environmental impact. This was reported by Yahoo Finance.
"The real competition between airlines and airports is in the transfer market. And, unfortunately, due to a lack of capacity, Heathrow has lost its status as a transfer hub," said Paul Griffiths.
He added that environmental initiatives are a hot topic worldwide, but in his opinion, this is an issue where there is no balanced debate. He said: "It's quite sad to see something that could really boost the British economy being stifled by a lack of capacity."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Heathrow Airport said: "Heathrow is the world's most connected international airport, handling more passengers than any other European hub and as the UK's most valuable port, we facilitate hundreds of billions of pounds worth of trade each year. We agree with the CEO of Dubai Airports that securing Heathrow's long-term growth will be key to protecting these benefits and the UK's future prosperity."
Earlier, TravelWise reported that Kent County plans to reconstruct the runway of the abandoned airport.
