Travel enthusiasts seeking an affordable European getaway have reason to rejoice. According to a new report, costs have dropped in 60% of the continent's popular destinations.

The UK Post Office's annual travel money report evaluated 37 European cities for the cost of short breaks. The analysis included expenses for accommodation, meals, and cultural attractions.

Eastern European cities dominate the top 10 list of most affordable destinations. Here’s the city that topped the chart as the cheapest in Europe.

Vilnius Emerges as Europe's Most Affordable City

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has reclaimed its title as the best-value destination. Its travel costs are over 10% lower than those in Lisbon, the runner-up, and less than half the costs in 18 other surveyed cities.

Lisbon, despite a 26% rise in the cost of three-star accommodations, remains the best-value city in Western Europe due to its affordable meals, drinks, and tourist activities. Lille, France, climbed to third place with a 30% reduction in accommodation prices.

Amsterdam Is Europe's Most Expensive City

Amsterdam tops the list of Europe’s most expensive cities for vacations, even though it experienced an 8.3% price drop. In the UK, Belfast and Edinburgh are the priciest capitals.

Highlights of Visiting Vilnius

Vilnius offers a charming and budget-friendly experience. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is a picturesque maze of baroque buildings and gothic churches. Key sights include the 15th-century St. Anne’s Church and the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral.

A notable historical site is the Stebuklas tile, marking the start of the Baltic Way—a human chain formed in 1989 to protest Soviet occupation. The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights, located in the former KGB headquarters, provides a poignant look into Lithuania's Soviet-era struggles.

Affordable Dining in Vilnius

Vilnius boasts numerous budget-friendly dining options. Local canteens serve traditional dishes at low prices. At Zilvino Restoranas you can enjoy šiupininė sriuba called hangover soup for around $3. Sultiniai offers hearty meals like pork-stuffed cabbage rolls and the national dish cepelinai of dumplings.
