Delhi Airport Faces Surge in Hoax Bomb Threats Amid Security Concerns

In the latest string of security disturbances at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, a 38-year-old man was apprehended on Saturday, February 17, for a false bomb threat he issued last month. This incident is part of a worrying trend at India's busiest airport, which has been the target of several bomb hoaxes over the past year.

The recent arrest followed intense interrogation by police, revealing that the intoxicated individual, identified as Krishno Mahto from West Champaran, Bihar, was responsible for the distressing call. Mahto's act is not an isolated one; the airport has been on high alert due to similar threats in recent times. In December 2023, Tejpal Solanki triggered a bomb scare, followed by Jay Krishna Kumar Mehta's hoax in January, aimed at delaying his flight.

These hoaxes not only disrupt airport operations but also pose significant challenges to security protocols, leading to unnecessary panic and operational delays. Following the January threat, the Delhi Police swiftly initiated a full emergency protocol, although no suspicious items were found. The meticulous investigation led to Mahto's capture, highlighting the relentless efforts of law enforcement to maintain security.

The deputy commissioner of police, Usha Rangnani, detailed the arrest process, underscoring the dedication to ensuring public safety. Despite the challenges posed by these hoaxes, Delhi Airport continues to focus on enhancing its infrastructure and operations. The addition of a fourth runway and an elevated taxiway in July 2023 aims to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
