Cats will be allowed in apartments again in Singapore
Singapore will repeal the law prohibiting cats in apartment buildings.
It was adopted in 1989 due to the difficulties that, according to lawmakers, were caused by keeping cats in apartments. They allegedly showed a tendency to shed hair, leave excrement or urinate in public places, and make noise that could cause inconvenience to neighbors, Reuters reports.
Violation of this ban was punishable by a fine of $3,000 and the possibility of eviction. However, the ban did not apply to dogs during all these years.
It is unclear what made the Singapore government change its mind, but it seems that the turning point was an official survey in 2022, which showed that 9 out of 10 respondents agreed that cats are suitable pets, including in apartments.
