Brussels Airlines Champions Sustainable Tourism in Ghana's Volta Region
In a remarkable initiative to bolster sustainable tourism in Ghana's Volta region, Brussels Airlines, renowned as the Africa expert within the Lufthansa Group, has launched the 6th edition of its "Bike in Africa" campaign. This initiative, set in motion on February 1, 2024, in Brussels, is not merely an adventurous excursion but a profound commitment to the African continent's development and environmental sustainability.
The latest edition of "Bike in Africa" introduces 120 Lufthansa Group employees to the exquisite landscapes and cultural richness of the Volta region through an intense 5-day biking and hiking tour. Departing from Brussels to Accra, this initiative broadens its scope by incorporating hiking options alongside biking, catering to diverse preferences among participants from various Lufthansa Group business units, including Eurowings, Lufthansa, Swiss, and Austrian Airlines.
Beyond the adventure, Brussels Airlines extends its mission to foster local economic growth and sustainable tourism practices. The airline has partnered with two local enterprises, Bravehearts Expedition LTD and Wasteman Ghana, dedicated to tourism development and recycling efforts, respectively. Through collaborative "design thinking" workshops, the initiative aims to refine these companies' strategic approaches, with input from Heritage University students in Accra and support from help alliance, the Lufthansa Group's charity organization.
This year's "Bike in Africa" transcends physical exploration, offering a unique blend of cultural immersion, economic support, and environmental stewardship. By engaging with the local community and supporting projects like "Kinder Paradise," Brussels Airlines and its partners underscore the crucial role of aviation in global connectivity and societal advancement.
As expressed by Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Brussels Airlines, this venture epitomizes the airline's dedication to being more than a transportation service but a pivotal force in creating a better world. Through initiatives like "Bike in Africa," Brussels Airlines not only promotes the enchanting beauty of Ghana but also contributes significantly to the sustainable development of tourism in the African continent.
