British Airways plane makes emergency landing in France: witness reports smoke in cockpit
A British Airways plane en route from Gibraltar to Heathrow, London, was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Nantes, France. The landing, according to witnesses, was "extremely hard," and the pilots complained of smoke.
No passengers were injured in the unforeseen incident. According to GBC News, a fire brigade met the plane on the runway.
The tourists, who found themselves in France unplanned, were taken to the airport and promised accommodation at a hotel.
The flight was supposed to depart from Gibraltar at 16:45, but, according to GBC, the pilot announced to the passengers that some tape had "come off the plane" and they would have to wait for an engineer. There was no specialist in Gibraltar, so the crew waited for an engineer to arrive from Malaga.
Later, passengers were informed that another malfunction had been found. After it was fixed, the plane took off at 19:42.
Upon reaching French airspace, the plane began to descend. A witness told reporters that due to smoke in the cockpit, crew members wore oxygen masks.
