Berlin's new airport plans to handle 24.8 million passengers in 2024
In 2023, Berlin Brandenberg Airport (BER) reached its annual target of 23 million passengers. This figure is 3 million more passengers than in 2022.
Airport CEO Aletta von Massenbach said that Berlin Brandenberg Airport (BER) will welcome 24.8 million passengers through its terminals over the next 12 months. Simple Flying reported that despite the growth in demand, the airport remains constrained and lags behind the country's major international hubs, such as: Munich Airport (MUC) and Frankfurt Airport (FRA).
It is noted that, compared to other European countries, the German aviation industry is stagnating, and low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair have significantly reduced their operations across the country. At the same time, Brandenburg Airport dropped to 12th place among the busiest airports.
Aletta von Massenbach notes that another problem and cause for concern is the "unjustified increase in airport fees in the city" and rising taxes.
"High government taxes and fees play a big role here. That's why airlines are cutting back on their services," said the CEO of Berlin-Brandenberg Airport.
However, at the same time, other carriers, including Norse Atlantic Airways and Eurowings, have increased their schedules, and German low-cost carrier Eurowings has added connections to Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) and Dubai International Airport (DBX) before 2023.
Also, transatlantic connections to Miami International Airport (MIA) and summer flights to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) were increased. In addition, in May 2024, Norse Atlantic Airways plans to resume flights to New York from May 1 to October 6.
