Bear rescued during shelling in Ukraine taken to Scottish zoo
An Asian black bear, which was rescued by volunteers from an abandoned zoo in Yampil (Donetsk region) last year, has arrived at the Five Sisters Zoo in Scotland, where it will now live.
This was reported on the zoo's Facebook page. "We are incredibly pleased to announce that Yampil has arrived with us here at Five Sisters Zoo from the Belgian rehabilitation center Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek," the post says.
The zoo said that the bear spent the morning exploring its temporary enclosure. A team of caretakers was on hand to make sure the animal was comfortable and had everything it needed while it got used to it.
By spring, Yampil should be transferred to his permanent enclosure. Donations for its equipment are still being collected. A little more than 70 thousand pounds out of the required 200 thousand pounds have already been raised.
