Austrian Airlines has announced an expansion of its route network for the 2024/2025 winter timetable, adding new destinations and increasing the frequency of existing popular routes. One of the significant additions is the city of Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, known for its winter sports and Northern Lights. The airline will also increase flights to major destinations such as Bangkok, New York, the Maldives, and Montreal.
The new winter destinations include Boston, Bremen, and Tbilisi, which were initially introduced in the 2024 summer schedule. According to CCO Michael Trestl, this expansion is part of the airline's strategy to offer a broad portfolio of destinations and return to pre-crisis levels in intercontinental services. The introduction of the Boeing 787 in 2024 will further enhance capacity and connectivity.
Ivalo, a new addition to Austrian Airlines' winter schedule, offers travelers a chance to experience a winter wonderland with activities like cross-country skiing, ski hiking, and aurora snowmobile safaris. The village is an excellent destination for winter sports enthusiasts, with several hundred kilometers of well-maintained trails. Additionally, visitors can enjoy observing reindeer and witnessing the Northern Lights.
The airline will operate the Ivalo route every Saturday from January to March. Boston, Bremen, and Tbilisi, which were added to the summer schedule, will also continue into the winter. These additions and increased frequencies on long-haul routes highlight Austrian Airlines' commitment to providing attractive connections worldwide.
For those looking to escape the winter chill, Austrian Airlines will increase the frequency of flights to warm destinations. The addition of two Boeing 787-9s will allow the airline to increase flights to Bangkok from seven to up to 13 per week. Flights to New York, Montreal, and the Maldives will also see an increase, with up to five flights per week. The new Boston connection will be operated up to three times a week.
Michael Trestl emphasized that the expansion aims to offer a broad portfolio of destinations and return to pre-crisis levels in intercontinental services. This approach ensures attractive connections and increased capacity for passengers traveling with Austrian Airlines.
