Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is currently in the throes of a significant transformation, having recently closed one of its security checkpoints for renovations. This development is part of a larger, ambitious expansion project aimed at enhancing the airport's capacity and functionality to better serve the increasing number of passengers.

Checkpoint Closure and Expansion

The closure of Checkpoint 3, situated at the west end of the Barbara Jordan Terminal, marks a pivotal step in the airport's expansion efforts. Previously equipped with two TSA lanes featuring advanced CT scanners for efficient 3D baggage imaging, the checkpoint's renovation is expected to dramatically increase its capacity. Upon completion, anticipated by 2026, the checkpoint could boast up to eight lanes, significantly reducing wait times and improving passenger flow.

Mitigating Passenger Impact

In the interim, AUS has taken measures to accommodate passengers through its three other operational checkpoints. Clear and regular TSA screenings are available at Checkpoint 1, while TSA PreCheck is designated to Checkpoint 2 East. Additional lanes at Checkpoint 2 West aim to alleviate potential bottlenecks, ensuring a smoother security process for travelers. Despite these efforts, passengers have reported varying wait times, highlighting the challenges of managing flow during construction phases.

Broader Infrastructure Improvements

The renovations at Checkpoint 3 are just one element of AUS's extensive $4 billion infrastructure improvement project, which includes the construction of a new satellite concourse connected by a pedestrian walkway beneath the tarmac. Additionally, an expansion to incorporate a new baggage handling system is underway, set to double the airport's luggage processing capacity to 4,000 bags per hour.

Federal Support and Future Outlook

AUS's expansion and improvement endeavors have been bolstered by a significant $39.1 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. This funding is a testament to the national recognition of the airport's strategic importance and its ongoing commitment to enhancing the traveler experience.

As the airport navigates these extensive renovations, the ultimate goal remains clear: to create a more efficient, capable, and traveler-friendly infrastructure that can accommodate the growing demands of the Austin community and its visitors.
