Another airline has increased the prices for checked baggage
JetBlue Airlines has significantly increased checked baggage fees on domestic flights starting February 1, 2024. However, for transatlantic flights, they have a different fee structure.
Simple Flying reported on the price increase, emphasizing that the changes in fares were made on the airline's website, but no official notifications to passengers appeared during the booking process.
The first checked bag of standard size will now cost $35 if booked 24 hours before departure or $45 if checked in at the airport.
The second checked bag will cost $50 if booked in advance or $60 if checked in.
These changes do not apply to JetBlue Mosaic elite customers, who will continue to be able to bring two bags for free. Travelers flying in Mint business class will not experience any price increases and can still take two bags.
JetBlue explains its decision by citing rising costs in the aviation industry, increases in staff salaries, rising fuel prices, and inflation.
Clearly, until the company becomes profitable and recovers from the pandemic, we should not expect a reduction in prices.
A JetBlue spokesperson responded to potential passenger concerns by assuring: "By adjusting fees for additional services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure that passenger favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed WiFi remain free for everyone."
As previously reported by TravelWise, American Airlines announced an increase in checked baggage fees.
