In a significant move to bolster its unmanned aerial system (UAS) portfolio, Airbus Helicopters has inked a deal to acquire Aerovel, a pioneer in autonomous flight technology. This strategic move is set to revolutionize the field of unmanned aviation, offering cutting-edge solutions for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions.

Flexrotor, Aerovel's flagship product, is a small yet powerful tactical UAS, expertly crafted for ISTAR operations both at sea and over land. Its design is a marvel of modern engineering, featuring Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities and a modest maximum launch weight of 25 kg. The Flexrotor's endurance surpasses 12-14 hours in typical operational settings, making it an indispensable tool for expeditionary missions with minimal operational footprint. Its versatility is further enhanced by its ability to accommodate various payloads, including advanced sensors and electro-optical systems, tailored to unique mission requirements.

Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, underscoring its alignment with Airbus' vision to diversify its UAS offerings. He highlighted the anticipated synergy between Aerovel's autonomous flight expertise and Airbus' ongoing UAS projects like the VSR700. This partnership promises to redefine manned-unmanned teaming in aerial missions.

Ali Dian, CEO of Aerovel, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the acceleration of unmanned aviation innovation and continued support for the US military and its allies. The merger honors the legacy of Aerovel's founder, Tad McGeer, who dedicated three decades to developing innovative unmanned products.

The Flexrotor's operational capabilities are impressive, proven through support from the US Department of Defense and deployment in various maritime security exercises. Its ability to autonomously launch and recover in confined spaces makes it ideal for harsh, high-threat, and GPS-denied environments. Additionally, its applications extend to parapublic missions, including forest fire surveillance and Arctic ice navigation, demonstrating its versatility and utility in critical scenarios.

The acquisition, while still subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions, is expected to close in 2024. Aerovel, based in Bingen, Washington, will continue to operate as a US-owned company under Airbus' Special Security Agreement (SSA), maintaining its collaboration with the US Department of Defense.

This groundbreaking acquisition by Airbus Helicopters not only marks a leap in unmanned aviation technology but also symbolizes a commitment to advancing autonomous systems, offering enhanced capabilities and solutions for diverse mission needs.
