Air India Unveils Its Airbus A350-900: A New Era in Luxury Travel
Air India has taken a significant step towards redefining luxury air travel by unveiling its Airbus A350-900, the new flagship of its fleet, at the Wings India aviation show. This event marks the beginning of a transformative journey for Air India, highlighting its commitment to excellence and innovation.
The first of 20 Airbus A350-900s, received by Air India on December 23, is a part of a larger order that includes 20 more of the larger A350-1000 model. This fleet expansion is not just an upgrade in numbers; it represents a pivotal shift in Air India's approach to air travel, blending modern luxury with efficiency.
At the heart of this transformation is the A350-900, considered by many as the cornerstone of the new Air India fleet. Initially configured for Aeroflot, the aircraft has been repurposed for Air India, eschewing any traces of its original design. The A350-900 boasts a three-class configuration, accommodating 316 passengers with 28 in business, 24 in premium economy, and 264 in economy.
The business class, outfitted with Collins Aerospace Horizon Premier seats, offers a unique blend of comfort and privacy. Each suite features a 79-inch fully flat bed, personal wardrobe, and direct aisle access. The inclusion of inflight humidifiers in the business class cabin is a thoughtful addition, enhancing passenger comfort and even the taste of food and beverages at high altitudes.
Adjacent to the business class, a social area that doubles as a bar promises to be a highlight for premium cabin passengers, offering a space for relaxation and socializing mid-flight.
In premium economy, passengers will enjoy the Collins Aerospace MIQ seat, offering more space and comfort than the economy class. The economy class itself is not left behind in terms of comfort, featuring a 31-inch seat pitch and a 12-inch HD screen.
Technologically, the aircraft is equipped with the Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system, offering over 2,200 hours of content. In-flight WiFi will also be available, with pricing details yet to be confirmed.
Looking ahead, Air India plans to deploy the A350-900s on international routes by mid-2024, with specific destinations still under wraps. Alongside the aircraft's introduction, the airline will also upgrade its amenity items and tableware. Ferragamo amenity kits for first and business class, TUMI products for premium economy, and sustainable kraft paper kits for economy passengers on long-haul flights are part of this overhaul.
The airline's commitment to a luxury experience extends to dining, with new chinaware adorned with Mandala patterns and unique tiffin box-shaped salt and pepper cruets. A revamped menu and expanded wine list for premium cabins are also on the horizon.
The commercial launch of the A350-900 is scheduled for January 22, 2024, with several weeks of domestic flights for crew training and final adjustments.
