Aer Lingus Reveals 2024's Top Travel Picks for Irish Adventurers
The Irish spirit of adventure and exploration is set to soar in 2024, as evidenced by the latest travel trend research from Aer Lingus. With the airline's January sale drawing to a close at midnight on Monday 15th January, it's clear that the Irish community's appetite for travel remains robust, fuelled by enticing offers and an array of dream destinations.
In 2023, a significant 60% of adults in Ireland embraced the joy of travel, taking two or more holidays abroad. This trend shows no signs of slowing down in 2024. Aer Lingus' research, coinciding with their January sale featuring over 4 million discounted seats, reveals a continued enthusiasm for international travel. The sale includes up to 25% off flights to Europe and the UK, with North American flights starting from €179 each way as part of a return trip.
When it comes to European travel in 2024, Spain reigns supreme, capturing the hearts of 60% of Irish travellers. Portugal and France follow, attracting 30% and 26% of travellers, respectively. The allure of the Greek Islands, Turkey, and Sicily also resonates with many, aligning perfectly with Aer Lingus' introduction of new routes to Crete, Sicily, and Turkey in Summer 2024. These routes promise to quench the thirst for cultural experiences and new adventures.
Beyond Europe, North American destinations like New York (61%), Florida (29%), and Boston (21%) are also top choices for 2024 travel. These destinations, known for their vibrant city life, stunning beaches, and rich cultural experiences, continue to draw Irish travellers in search of diverse experiences.
The research highlights a predominant desire for leisure and relaxation among travellers, with 57% citing leisure as the main reason for travel. The anticipation for beach holidays (55%) and city explorations (53%) tops the list of preferred activities. Interestingly, there is a gender divergence in preferences, with women leaning more towards beach relaxation and men towards city exploration.
In a shift towards more spontaneous travel styles, 57% of travellers favour self-guided and impromptu experiences over structured tours. This preference for spontaneity and flexibility reflects a broader trend in travel, where individuals seek unique, personalized experiences.
Social media and personal networks play a significant role in shaping travel decisions. Over half of Irish travellers (54%) are inspired by friends and family, with Instagram and review websites also being popular sources of travel ideas. Notably, Gen Z travellers show a higher inclination towards social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
In making travel decisions, cost is a primary consideration for many, particularly among younger travellers. However, for those aged 65 and over, cost is less of a concern, suggesting a potential for more luxury or unique travel experiences within this demographic.
Aer Lingus' research not only highlights the diverse preferences and influences shaping Irish travel trends in 2024 but also underscores the airline's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers. With new destinations and attractive offers, Aer Lingus is poised to facilitate memorable journeys for Irish travellers, whether they seek sun-soaked beaches, bustling cities, or the charm of undiscovered locales.
