5 tips to help take care of indoor plants while on vacation
Vacation is a great opportunity to relax and recharge, but what about your potted plants? After all, they might dry out during your absence.
With proper planning and mindful care, you can ensure that your plants not only survive but thrive while you're away. News Bytes offers useful tips to help you take care of your leafy friends.
Water the plants
Don't forget to water your plants before you leave. Both indoor and outdoor plants should be placed in a cool, shaded area to prevent rapid drying out in excessive sunlight.
Properly watered, plants can last for a week. Note that terracotta pots, unlike glazed ceramic or plastic ones, allow soil moisture to evaporate more quickly.
Use automatic watering techniques
For longer trips, consider setting up a wick watering system for your indoor plants.
Place one end of a long cotton rope into a large container of water and the other end into the soil where your plants are growing. The cotton rope will facilitate the flow of water from the container to the plant, keeping it hydrated.
Create a greenhouse for your plants
Take a clear plastic bag large enough to cover both the pot and the plant.
Carefully place the plant inside the bag and wrap it around the plant. Leave a small opening to allow air circulation and seal the bag.
Ensure your plant receives indirect sunlight and water. This makeshift greenhouse will help retain moisture for your plant.
Pay attention to plant placement
Arrange plants based on their watering needs. Grouping plants with similar moisture requirements ensures efficient care and prevents over- or under-watering.
If possible, relocate sensitive plants away from direct sunlight to reduce water evaporation and leaf stress.
Shield delicate plants from intense sunlight with a shade cloth. This protective layer minimizes temperature fluctuations and reduces water loss through transpiration.
Seek assistance with plant care
Before you depart for vacation, gather all your houseplants and place them near the entrance or in a convenient spot.
While you're away, enlist the help of a friend, neighbor, gardener, or house sitter to water your plants.
