2023 named one of the safest years in the history of aviation
Last year, 37 million flights were operated, which is 17% more than in the previous year. At the same time, according to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) annual report on global aviation safety, commercial flights were the safest in history in 2023.
It is noted that this does not mean that there were no emergencies in the world at all, but their number has decreased significantly. This was reported by InsideHook.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh said, "There were no injuries or fatalities during jet flights. In 2023, we also recorded the lowest risk of fatalities and the lowest 'all accidents' rate on record."
It is noted that last year the average accident rate was 0.80 per million flights, or 1 accident for every 1.26 million flights. In addition, this figure was better than in 2022, which was 1.30 per million flights and exceeded the five-year average of 1.19 (1 accident for every 880,293 flights).
At the same time, Willie Walsh emphasised, "Two high-profile accidents in the first month of 2024 show that even though flying is one of the safest activities a person can do, there is always room for improvement. This is what we have done throughout our history. And we will continue to make flying even safer."
Earlier, TravelWise reported that flight attendants warned passengers against improving flight conditions on their own.
