13 elephants to be transported from Britain to Africa: it will be the world's first attempt to rewild an entire herd
Thirteen elephants will be transported to Africa from Britain in the world's first attempt to rewild an entire herd to restore the ecosystem.
The herd from the Howletts Wildlife Park in Kent was born in captivity and ranges in age from two to 34 years. With a total weight of 25 tons, they will be delivered on two Boeing 777 cargo planes 4 miles across the globe to their ancestral homeland in Kenya, the Daily Mail reports.
Although there have been small attempts at rewilding with individual elephants - or at most a couple - this will be the first time an entire herd will be moved into the wild.
The charity Aspinall Foundation, which works in partnership with Howletts, firmly believes that the elephants there - and all other animals - belong in the wild.
And he urged other zoos to follow suit. The herd is already being taught to enter specially built cages. The day will soon come to take them to their new home. Veterinarians will accompany them all the way.
