UK Beaches Reopen to Dogs After Summer Bans
Seasonal dog restrictions have ended at many UK beaches after the summer period finished on 30 September, reopening stretches of coastline that were off-limits or restricted during peak months. The rules are set locally rather than nationally, so the change does not apply in exactly the same way everywhere. Some beaches now allow dogs all day again, while others still keep separate lead or access rules.

The end of September is not a nationwide switch-off. Some councils keep restrictions for longer, while certain beaches and wildlife areas remain dog-free all year. At Hunstanton in Norfolk, for example, dogs are excluded from part of the beach until 31 October. Cornwall also maintains year-round bans at Carnsew Pool, Copperhouse Pool and Hayle Estuary, so autumn access still depends on the individual location.
Several popular coastal spots are now easier to visit with a dog. Bournemouth allows dogs on all beach sections until 30 April, while Llandudno’s North and West Shores are fully open to dogs during the same period. In Cornwall, seasonal daytime restrictions have ended at Porthmeor, Porthminster, Gyllyngvase, Sennen, Polzeath and Widemouth Bay, opening up more options for autumn coastal walks.
Autumn and winter breaks now offer dog owners a much wider choice of coastal walks, including popular resort beaches that restrict pets during the summer season. Assistance dogs remain exempt from many exclusion orders while working, while dog-fouling rules continue throughout the year. Lead requirements can also remain in force away from the sand, particularly on promenades and piers, even where the beach itself has reopened.
