Helsinki Airport will introduce a new play area for young children in its baggage hall this February, timed to coincide with Finland’s busy winter holiday season. The facility is being installed near baggage belt 10 and is expected to be ready in week 7. The airport operator says the space is intended to make the final stage of the journey calmer and more pleasant for families arriving in the country.

The area includes several features aimed at keeping small children occupied while luggage is collected. Equipment such as a spring rocker, a small slide and a themed spotting activity have been incorporated to maintain a sense of play after landing. The zone has been designed with short dwell times in mind, giving parents a way to manage excitement and restlessness during peak travel windows.

Nature is used as a core motif throughout the space. Visual elements reference Finland’s national animals and plants, giving the area a distinctly local identity and a soft, welcoming look. Airport representatives describe the installation as an extension of existing family-oriented services at Helsinki Airport, which has been adding facilities and service options aimed at smoothing busy travel periods.

For visitors, the baggage hall location allows children to play within sight of arriving luggage, reducing tension during long waits at the belt. Families arriving during ski holidays or half-term breaks can settle in before heading to destinations such as Helsinki’s Design District, Nuuksio National Park, or onward rail links toward Tampere, Turku or Lapland’s winter resorts. The update also sits alongside tools like the airport’s MyFlight service for planning airport use.

Families often feel the strain right after landing, especially when everyone is tired and waiting around for bags. Helsinki Airport has clearly clocked this and gone for a simple fix: make that moment easier rather than flashier. With winter holiday traffic set to spike, the new play area gives parents a breather and keeps small kids occupied without changing how the airport runs. It’s a small tweak, but one that genuinely improves the end of the journey.
