Delta is the last airline to raise baggage fees

Delta Air Lines has raised baggage fees on domestic and some international routes, becoming the latest airline in the US to do so. The carrier has raised the fee for the first and second checked bags by $5.

Customers will have to pay $35 (up from $30) for the first checked bag and $45 (up from $40) for the second checked bag. The increase in fees does not apply to flights between the United States or Canada and Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, or Uruguay.

Delta noted that this is the first increase the company has made since 2018 and said the change will help to address rising costs in the industry.

The increase came after several other major carriers raised baggage fees in the same way, including United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and JetBlue, which raised baggage fees by $10.

This comes a few months after Delta was forced to backtrack on sweeping changes to its SkyMiles loyalty program that made it harder to get status or access to Delta Sky Club airport lounges, which caused a quick backlash after the carrier's initial announcement.

Delta is also adding new premium lounges to its repertoire with benefits such as a chef's kitchen, a wellness center, and a large outdoor terrace. The new facilities will be launched at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS).
