Cathay has expressed its strong support for the Hong Kong SAR Government's latest initiatives aimed at bolstering the city's status as a premier international aviation hub. These initiatives were highlighted in the Budget Speech delivered by Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po on February 28, underscoring the government's dedication to the aviation sector.

Ronald Lam, Cathay Group's Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the airline's commitment to Hong Kong's future and its role in connecting the city with the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world. Cathay, alongside approximately 120 other airlines, offers flights to around 180 destinations globally, operating from the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

A significant development for the industry and Cathay is the impending commissioning of the Three-Runway System at HKIA, slated for the end of 2024. This expansion is expected to open new avenues for the aviation sector. Lam voiced his support for the government's efforts to enhance intermodal connectivity through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Three-Runway System. He also highlighted Cathay's plans to expand flight services, particularly to countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Cathay's role as a major contributor to Hong Kong's position as a leading air cargo hub was also acknowledged, with Lam welcoming the ongoing development of air cargo services. He pointed out the successful collaboration within the Greater Bay Area (GBA), particularly noting the HKIA Logistics Park in Dongguan, which has significantly facilitated intermodal cargo transshipments.

The airline is taking a forward-looking approach to sustainability, with Lam expressing enthusiasm for the government's commitment to supporting the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This move is seen as crucial for maintaining Hong Kong's aviation leadership while transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

Cathay is also focused on talent development within the aviation industry, aiming to support its rebuild journey by recruiting and training individuals. Furthermore, Lam applauded the government's initiatives to boost tourism, which align with Cathay's goals to welcome international visitors to Hong Kong, reinforcing the city's status as a top global tourist destination.

This comprehensive support from the government and Cathay's proactive strategies underscore a collective effort to enhance Hong Kong's aviation industry, promising a bright future for the city as a global aviation and tourist hub.
