WestJet Acquires Canada's First Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Shell Aviation
WestJet, the prominent Canadian airline, has taken a significant step in its commitment to sustainability by acquiring Shell Aviation's first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) available for purchase in Canada. This move underscores WestJet's dedication to advancing its sustainability framework and pursuing ambitious net-zero emissions goals by 2050.
The acquisition of SAF from Shell Aviation marks a notable milestone in WestJet's mission to reduce its carbon footprint. This development is a key component in making Canada's aviation industry more environmentally sustainable. Angela Avery, WestJet Group Executive Vice President and Chief People, Corporate, and Sustainability Officer, stated that the airline is proud to be the first in Canada to acquire SAF from Shell, highlighting the airline's history of innovation in sustainability technologies.
SAF has the potential to reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% when used in its pure form compared to conventional aviation fuel. WestJet aims to work with government and industry partners to establish a sustainable, long-term commercial framework for SAF. Shell's SAF is blended with traditional jet fuel to meet all safety and certification requirements, allowing it to be used without additional investments in aircraft engines or infrastructure.
Christine Bassitt, General Manager of Shell Aviation, Americas, emphasized the importance of supporting customers on their decarbonization journeys. She mentioned that the Avelia program, one of the world's first blockchain-powered digital SAF book-and-claim solutions for air travel, allows for transparent tracking of environmental attributes and avoids double counting.
WestJet's commitment to sustainability extends beyond the acquisition of SAF. The airline continues to focus on reducing emissions intensity, modernizing its fleet, and advocating for sustainable aviation fuel production in Canada. With this purchase, WestJet sets a positive example for the aviation industry in embracing sustainable practices while ensuring affordable air travel for Canadians.
