UN Tourism and Croatia Launch Groundbreaking Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism
The United Nations' tourism arm is collaborating with the Government of Croatia and the University of Zagreb to establish a pioneering research center in Zagreb, aimed at enhancing sustainable tourism practices globally. This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the environmental challenges posed by the tourism industry.
The announcement, made by the Croatian Minister of Tourism and Sport, Nikolina Brnjac, alongside UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, underscores Croatia's leadership in promoting sustainable tourism. The new research facility will serve as a hub for innovation, engaging a wide range of stakeholders to develop and disseminate sustainable tourism strategies.
The center will focus on several critical areas, including the reduction of tourism's environmental footprint, increasing the use of renewable energy, and adapting tourism practices to climate change. Additionally, it aims to preserve the cultural heritage and improve the livelihoods of local communities through responsible tourism practices. These efforts are expected to lead to more sustainable policies and practices that benefit destinations worldwide.
This partnership between UN Tourism and Croatia is particularly significant given Croatia's past role as chair of UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability. The collaboration is poised to drive significant advancements in sustainable tourism, positioning Croatia at the forefront of this crucial global movement.
In comments at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Pololikashvili praised Croatia's exemplary role in sustainable tourism development. Minister Brnjac also expressed pride in Croatia’s recognition as a leader in sustainable tourism practices by a major global tourism organization.
