UK Government Allocates £4.65 Million to Enhance Bus Accessibility for Disabled Passengers
In a landmark move aimed at making public transport more accessible, the UK Government has announced a £4.65 million fund to upgrade buses with audio and visual information systems across Great Britain. Launched on April 8, 2024, this initiative, named the Accessible Information Grant, enables small bus and coach operators to introduce real-time travel updates, significantly improving travel experiences for passengers with visual and hearing impairments.
This funding builds on previous efforts to enhance public transport accessibility, following regulations introduced last year mandating such informational updates. Guy Opperman, Minister for Accessibility, highlighted the importance of this development for disabled passengers, who rely heavily on buses for their daily commutes, social engagements, and medical appointments.
The grant aims to ensure all passengers, especially those with disabilities, can travel with ease and confidence, knowing their route and stop information throughout their journey. This move is in line with the government's commitment to an inclusive public transportation network, making travel more accessible for everyone.
Complementing the grant, the government, alongside charity Scope, released the 'Right to Ride' guide. This resource provides vital information, rights, and advice for disabled passengers, aiming to enhance their public transport experience and addressing the challenges they face during travel disruptions.
This initiative and the guide represent significant strides towards removing barriers in public transport, ensuring a more accessible and inclusive travel experience for disabled passengers across the UK.
