The year 2024 could become the hottest in history
The year 2024 could break the record set in 2023 and become the hottest year on record.
According to Bloomberg, citing scientists, the average global temperature is projected to increase by 1.3-1.6°C compared to the pre-industrial period.
The global temperature will continue to be influenced by the natural phenomenon of El Niño, associated with fluctuations in the temperature of the surface water layer in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Michael McFadden, a senior scientist at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, explains that there is a delay between the heating of water in the Pacific Ocean and the rise in air temperature near the planet's surface. Consequently, the second year under the influence of El Niño tends to be hotter than the previous one.
Human activities contribute to the Earth's rising temperature, with fuel combustion increasing the levels of greenhouse gases. Elevated temperatures on the planet alter the usual climate, leading to droughts, floods, forest fires, and storms.
The year 2023 was the warmest on record since records began. Notably, temperature records were broken in June, July, August, September, October, and November. In 2023, the Earth's temperature increased by approximately 1.4°C compared to the pre-industrial period.
