The world's first cruise operator to receive the Green Globe certification
The French cruise ship operator Ponant has become the world's first cruise line to receive the Green Globe certificate. All Ponant cruise ships have been awarded this prestigious certificate.
The Green Globe certificate is an international standard for travel and tourism stakeholders, recognizing the company's commitment to responsible tourism. This was reported by blooloop.
"This is important for our guests, as well as for us to continue to encourage the entire maritime sector to realize its environmental transition," said Wassim Dawood, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Ponant.
Ponant notes that while the goal this year was to obtain the certificate, the main task in the coming years will be to maintain it.
It is emphasized that since 2019, Ponant's entire fleet has been using low-sulfur marine gas oil (LS-MGO), which has a sulfur content of less than 0.05 percent. This is 13 times less than current marine standards.
According to the press release, Ponant became the first cruise line in the world to eliminate fuel oil. Additionally, the company has equipped its entire fleet with catalytic converters to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, and shore-based power connection systems in ports allow engines to be turned off. Ponant aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent per cruise day by 2030 compared to 2018.
The company has also reduced waste production by gradually phasing out single-use plastic. In 2022, almost 390,000 disposable bottles were avoided.
What is Green Globe?
Introduced in 1998, the Green Globe standard assesses the sustainability of business operations based on 44 criteria and 380 indicators organized around four pillars: sustainable management, social and economic performance, cultural heritage, and the environment.
