The tallest magnolia in the country was cut in the UK
A magnolia that was planted in a garden in Dorset more than 50 years ago has been cut down. According to its owner, the tree had begun to rot and could have damaged her and a neighbor's property, and therefore, according to a Tree Preservation Order, the tree was to be cut down.
This 60-foot magnolia tree was considered one of the tallest in Britain. This was reported by Yahoo News.
The news of the tree's elimination disappointed local residents, who are used to admiring the magnolia blossoms. In addition, the local authorities had previously noted that this ornamental tree contributed to the "significant visual improvement" of the area and was "a perfect example of an unusual tree, so it has a rare value."
At the same time, white fungal fruiting bodies found in the trunk of the tree indicated that the northern trunk of the tree was rotting. According to arboricultural consultant Andrew Cleaves, because the tree is exposed to winds blowing from the nearby Poole Harbor, there was a risk that the magnolia could fall and damage the property closest to it.
But a spokesman for the Dorset Lake Community Group said the tree had grown well above the average height of a magnolia tree of 20 feet, and it was a shame to get rid of it. He said: "It's a tough decision, I'm a big tree lover, but I think it was the right tree in the wrong place."
