The legendary Viking sailing ship Saga Farmann will be launched again in Istanbul
A replica of the Viking sailing ship Saga Farmann, discovered in archaeological excavations and dating back to the 10th century AD, will spend the winter in Istanbul's Golden Horn.
It will first be on display for three months at the Rahmi M. Koche Museum and then set sail to complete the historic Viking trade route across the Mediterranean. After a 13-week trip with a crew of 12, the yacht, which arrived in Istanbul in August, will stay in the Turkish capital for the winter, Anadolu reports.
Completely handcrafted from wood and wrought iron materials, following ancient techniques, Saga Farmann will undergo weekly inspections by a dedicated team at Golden Horn Shipyard until April.
In April, the ship will set sail for the Mediterranean Sea, and the crew and technical staff will arrive at the shipyard for the last maintenance work, following the historic Viking trade route to Norway.
It is planned that the ship will pass through the Sea of Marmara and the Strait of Dardanelles to Greece, the Adriatic Sea, Italy, Tunisia, France and the coastal cities of Spain, passing through the Strait of Gibraltar and reaching its first destination - Tonsberg.
