Syracuse Hancock International Sees Surge in Passenger Traffic in March 2024
March 2024 marked a record-breaking month for Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR), as it became the fifth busiest month in the airport's history for passenger traffic since 2005. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at SYR screened an astounding 140,790 individuals, setting a new March record that surpasses the previous high in 2005 when 126,319 passengers were screened.
This surge in travelers is part of a broader trend observed at SYR, with the airport experiencing its busiest passenger volume in nearly two decades. "This year has brought an unprecedented number of travelers through our checkpoint, marking the busiest period we've seen in about 20 years," noted Bart R. Johnson, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Upstate New York. The TSA team remains dedicated to their mission, emphasizing the importance of prepared travelers for a seamless screening process.
The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) is keenly aware of the challenges and opportunities that come with increased passenger volumes. "The rise in SYR traffic highlights the critical role of our TSA partners in maintaining the security of the National Airspace System," stated SRAA Executive Director Jason Terreri. He advises travelers to arrive at the airport two hours prior to their scheduled departure to ensure a smooth and stress-free start to their journey.
To assist travelers, the TSA recommends arriving at checkpoints prepared and aware of security procedures, including having ID and boarding passes readily accessible. For those uncertain about what items can be brought through security, the TSA offers resources like the myTSA app and @AskTSA on social media platforms for quick answers.
Moreover, travelers at SYR can take advantage of the TSA PreCheck® program for an expedited screening experience. With a PreCheck enrollment center conveniently located within the airport, this program offers a streamlined security process, allowing participants to move through checkpoints with minimal delays and enhanced convenience.
