Six out of the 10 most expensive restaurants in the world serve sushi
While many people associate the idea of an expensive meal with steak and caviar, some of the priciest restaurants in the United States and around the world specialize in Japanese techniques that can take a chef many years to master.
Omakase, a type of dish in which a series of small dishes are selected and prepared by the chef, is gaining popularity in major US cities, with six of the top 10 most expensive restaurants in the world currently featuring sushi on their menus, as reported by The Daily Courier.
By examining the cost of a tasting menu per person or estimating the cost of dishes on an average menu, the British gaming platform Slingo has identified Morihiro and Sushi Ginza Onodera in Los Angeles as among the most expensive in the world - with an average check of $400 or £314 per person at either establishment.
While New York's Caviar Russe claimed the top spot on the list due to the presence of many rare types of caviar on the menu (with an average check of $555 per person), three of the top five restaurants and six of the top 10 identified by Slingo as the world's most expensive either exclusively focus on sushi or serve it as part of a broader Japanese menu.
"As a 13-time Michelin star winner, Sushi Ginza Onodera is held to a high standard," write the authors of the report. "The second-ranked Japanese restaurant offers quality traditional Edomae-style sushi with fish imported from Tokyo."
Other restaurants that made the top 10 included n/naka, Sushi Kaneyoshi, Q Sushi, and Hayato, all in Los Angeles. Although the list includes Melisse, a French-American restaurant from Los Angeles, and Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Table and Restaurant in London, Japanese cuisine and the city of Los Angeles dominated the list with numerous entries.
