Residents of the popular Spanish resort claimed to be "spitting in the beer" of tourists
Residents of a popular Spanish resort, Barcelona, have launched a "popular resistance" against the rapid development of tourism in the city. People complain about problems caused by crowds of foreigners and try to scare them away themselves.
A Telegraph expert familiar with the situation spoke about the outrageous graffiti that Spaniards leave on walls and other surfaces. These messages can potentially spoil tourists' vacation experiences.
Local authorities are also fighting against the excessive influx of foreigners by raising tourist taxes, setting limits on the number of tourist groups, and stopping the development of hotels.
However, this is not enough to keep the locals happy. They have taken to the streets to fight back against travelers, leaving threats on walls and urging them to return home.
Some inscriptions read: "Tourist, go home", "Your luxurious trip is my daily poverty", etc. These are the most tolerant and polite appeals from Barcelona residents.
In the Gracia neighborhood, for example, the messages are more aggressive. "We spit in your beer. Cheers," outraged residents write.
In some places, posters encouraging "balconing" - jumping from balcony to balcony - are also hanging on the walls, which is practiced by drunken tourists. Some foreigners have already been injured because of this, the expert noted.
