Norwegian Airline Soars in Global Climate Efforts, Achieving Top CDP Scores
In a remarkable advancement for sustainable aviation, Norwegian has been recognized for its exceptional environmental efforts in the latest global climate ranking by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), showcasing the airline's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. This year, Norwegian not only improved its overall score to a B but also achieved the highest possible scores in crucial areas such as risk management processes, risk disclosure, and in the reporting and verification of direct and indirect energy supply emissions (Scope 1 and 2).
The CDP, a renowned environmental organization, conducts an annual global environmental disclosure system, highlighting the efforts of companies worldwide to mitigate climate change. Norwegian's strategy for diminishing its climate impact has been meticulously evaluated across several categories, resulting in an enhanced score from the previous year. This significant achievement underscores the airline's dedication to environmental stewardship and its active role in combating greenhouse gas emissions.
Anders Fagernæs, Vice President of Sustainability at Norwegian, expressed the company's pride and motivation in receiving such recognition. "We have committed to ambitious targets and are actively taking measures to reduce the company’s climate impact. It is therefore both rewarding and motivating to see that the hard work we are doing leads to improvement in more categories than before. This means a lot to us and confirms that our strategy is working," Fagernæs stated.
Since beginning its climate change disclosures through the CDP in 2021, Norwegian has demonstrated considerable progress, reflecting its commitment to environmental transparency. This transparency is integral to the airline's strategy to meet the growing demand from investors, financial institutions, customers, and policymakers for clear environmental accountability.
Norwegian's approach to reducing its climate impact involves a multifaceted strategy. Fagernæs highlighted the pivotal role of fossil-free fuels, alongside fleet renewal and the use of advanced weather systems for more fuel-efficient navigation, as key components of their emissions reduction efforts. "We believe that transparency, reporting, and openness will make it easier for customers to make qualified choices," he added.
This recognition from the CDP is a testament to Norwegian's innovative strategies and hard work towards a more sustainable aviation sector. With the airline's focus on reducing environmental impact through the use of sustainable fuels and technological advancements, Norwegian sets an inspiring example for the industry, leading the way towards a greener future in air travel.
