New GEMs for travellers: 5 tourist destinations to open in 2024
After delays due to renovations, natural disasters, and general construction, a number of well-known tourist destinations are scheduled to open in 2024. They will definitely impress travellers.
From the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo to Tiana's Bayou Adventure at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Koreaherald.com has published five tourist destinations worth visiting in the new year.
Notre Dame Cathedral in France
Notre Dame is scheduled to reopen in December 2024, which means that people have already started booking tickets. The "safety phase" of the cathedral was completed in 2021 after a fire destroyed its roof and spire in April 2019.
Kobe Port Tower, Japan
When the Kobe Port Tower closed in 2021 due to COVID-19-related restrictions, managers began renovation work. The city's largest tourist attraction will reopen in the spring of 2024.
The Grand Egyptian Museum of Cairo
Chronic delays since 2019 have hampered the construction of the billion-dollar state-of-the-art Grand Egyptian Museum, better known as GEM. According to their website, the GEM is now scheduled to open in early 2024. The museum plans to house 100,000 artefacts, 20 percent of which will be on public display in 12 exhibition halls covering 44,965 square metres of space.
Tiana Baio's Adventure at Disney World, Disneyland
This year, Splash Mountain at Disneyland officially closed after more than 33 years at the California resort. The move came after a petition to change the theme of the favourite water ride went viral in 2020. Splash Mountain, scheduled to open in 2024, will be replaced by The Adventures of Tiana Bayou, based on the 2009 Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog.
Underground at Adventureland in Des Moines, Iowa
Opened in 1974 in a small former airport in Des Moines, Iowa, Adventureland became a major family vacation destination for travellers in the Midwest during the 1970s and 80s. Just a few years after the park's opening, a wooden roller coaster called "Tornado" was added, named after a tornado that delayed the park's grand opening. A new feature called Underground is scheduled to open for the park's 50th anniversary in 2024. (UPI)
