Net migration in New Zealand has broken records, but the qualification of immigrants worries the country
Official data reveals that in 2023, New Zealand experienced a record-breaking net migration level of 133,800 individuals, marking a notable 91% increase in newcomers. This surge underscores the country's allure as a preferred destination among foreigners.
Statistics New Zealand, as reported by News Hub, also noted a 30% rise in the number of migrants departing the country.
Analysis of the data indicates that the majority of immigrants originate from India, with their numbers increasing by 51,000 over the year. Following closely, the Philippines accounted for the second-largest group of newcomers, totaling 36,500 individuals.
Additionally, citizens of New Zealand, Fiji, and South Africa emerged as the next three most common nationalities among immigrants.
Earlier discussions led by Treasury Secretary Nicola Willis hinted at potential adjustments to immigration policies, expressing reservations regarding the skill levels of individuals arriving on work visas.
During the Economic Forum in early 2024, Willis remarked, "If you examine the skill level of individuals holding work visas, you'll find that many of them possess very low skill levels."
