Nearly free upgrade: flight attendants debunk popular TikTok advice
Flight attendants debunk a popular TikTok tip promising passengers an almost free upgrade. A travel company has warned that the almost free upgrade tip is unlikely to work but has shared how tourists can get a discount.
Travel Republic, an all-inclusive vacation booking company, shared a tip that can help tourists get a free upgrade, albeit with a warning. This was reported by express.co.
With many travelers experiencing cramped or uncomfortable conditions on long-haul flights, the idea of getting more space in a better class can be very appealing.
On the podcast "Are You Tripping?", former Love Island contestant Antigone Buxton explained how she managed to upgrade her seat by bringing a gift for the flight attendants.
She explained: "My friend is a flight attendant, and she gave me some advice. She said that if you want to upgrade your service, take a box of donuts for the staff on the plane. Go on the plane and say it's for you, and they will upgrade you when they can. I did that, and it worked."
The podcast video received more than 92,000 likes when posted on the @kybetravel TikTok page, but several flight attendants commented on it, saying that while the gesture was incredibly kind, it was unlikely to help tourists looking for an upgrade.
One flight attendant said: "The crew appreciates it. You won't be upgraded to business class for sure, but maybe you'll get a free drink and snack or something for such a nice gesture."
Another added: "As a flight attendant, you may receive special treatment from the crew to some extent, but not an upgrade."
Instead, Kate Staniforth, head of marketing at Travel Republic, believes that the best way to guarantee a last-minute upgrade is to contact the airline's ticketing office.
She advised: "If you want to upgrade, you have the option to do so before you arrive at the airport or upon arrival. Check seat availability and explore the possibility of upgrading. If you want to upgrade at the airport, go to the airline counter and ask - the earlier you arrive, the better your chances of getting an upgrade. It is important to remain flexible, as upgrades are subject to availability."
Earlier, TravelWise reported why it's a bad idea to try to upgrade your flight on your own.
