Movies about airplanes for high-flying enthusiasts
A lot can happen on an airplane. You can fall in love, catch a criminal, or even engage in an all-out war with a flock of snakes. Of course, we're talking about movies—movies that take place on an airplane or in an airport seem unique. They make comic books more romantic, action movies more exciting, and dramas even more mind-blowing because they take place 36,000 feet in the air.
Movies about air travel tend to keep you in suspense. There are also outright horror movies like "Final Destination" or "Red Eye." They are definitely not for the faint of heart—or those who plan to travel in the near future. Travelandleisure.com has published a selection of movies that include air travel. Who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to organize a travel-themed movie night tonight.
"Turbulence"
In this movie, Ray Liotta plays the role of a convicted murderer who hijacks an airplane. It's a pretty typical airplane action movie with all the tropes, which is probably why the movie has a whopping 16 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. There's a lot of acting that really chews up the scenery, as well as some interesting (though mostly implausible) technical stuff from the plane. Trailer.
"Non-Stop"
Liam Neeson plays an alcoholic US marshal who must find a killer after receiving text messages that another passenger will die if the killer's demands are not met. It's one of those suspenseful thrillers that audiences have come to expect from the star of "Taken," and if you're willing to look past the loose ends and blatant implausibilities, you'll definitely enjoy it. Trailer.
"The View from the Top"
Back in the early 2000s, Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in a number of strange romantic comedies. In this film, Paltrow plays the role of a trailer park girl who dreams of becoming a cool flight attendant—and she has the intelligence and desire to achieve this. Is it worth sacrificing all this personal success for the young Mark Ruffalo? We are not sure. But there are some good silly moments in this movie, especially from Mike Myers, Christina Applegate, and Candice Bergen. Trailer.
"Con Air"
This movie may not have won any prestigious awards, but it has become something of a cult classic, if only because of the famous line "Put the bunny back in the box." The script is sometimes quite hard to listen to, and Nicolas Cage has a hard time with his Alabama accent, but with all its entertaining over-the-top performances and explosions (lots of explosions), it's enjoyable for people who like movies that are "so bad, they're good." Trailer.
"Final Destination"
Let's just say that this is not a movie you want to watch on an airplane. We, as a society, might have been tired of the teen horror movies of the '90s, but this 2000 film actually has a pretty surprising and clever premise that goes beyond the typical slasher. While it may not have gotten great reviews at the time, audiences still enjoy it, receiving a pretty decent audience score of 68 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Trailer.
