Marriott International Achieves Major Milestone Towards Net-Zero Emissions Goals
Marriott International, Inc. has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by securing verification for its science-based emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As the largest global hospitality company to receive such approval, Marriott's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a notable stride towards environmental stewardship.
The verified targets encompass both short and long-term objectives, aligning with data-driven methodologies provided by SBTi. By 2030, Marriott aims to slash absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% from a 2019 baseline.
Additionally, the company pledges a 27.5% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from various sources, including fuel and energy-related activities, waste generation, and employee commuting. Moreover, by 2028, Marriott endeavors to ensure that 22% of its suppliers implement science-based emission reduction targets.
Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International, emphasizes the company's enduring commitment to environmental responsibility. He underscores Marriott's dedication to leveraging its global reach for positive change, citing the approval of their emission reduction targets as a testament to the collective efforts of Marriott teams worldwide.
To realize its net-zero ambition, Marriott is prioritizing three key areas: energy reduction, increased utilization of renewable energy sources, and procurement of goods with lower carbon footprints.
Marriott's recent sustainability initiatives include the launch of the Climate Action Program (CAP), tailored carbon and energy reduction targets for all managed and franchised properties, and enhancements to the Marriott Environment Sustainability Hub (MESH), facilitating property-specific strategies for energy and carbon reduction. Additionally, the Energy Optimization Program assists properties in enhancing energy efficiency, while engagement with suppliers aims to drive emissions reductions throughout the supply chain.
