Lufthansa Group's Green Fares: A Leap Towards Sustainable Air Travel
One year following its introduction, the Lufthansa Group's Green Fares initiative has surpassed a major milestone, attracting over one million passengers who have opted for this environmentally friendly travel option. This initiative, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of air travel, showcases a strong and growing demand for sustainable travel solutions among passengers.
The Green Fares program, which integrates Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and supports climate protection projects to offset flight-related CO2 emissions, has been especially popular on routes like Hamburg-Munich, Zurich-London, and Frankfurt-Berlin. Business Class travelers have shown considerable interest, with 11% of bookings through Lufthansa Group portals opting for Green Fares.
Since its launch, the program has contributed to offsetting more than 77,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the emissions from over 12,000 flights between Hamburg and Munich on an Airbus A320neo. This initiative reflects the Lufthansa Group's commitment to sustainability, covering over 730,000 flights annually within Europe and to destinations like Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
The Lufthansa Group's ambitious sustainability goals include achieving a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and halving its net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy that emphasizes fleet modernization, operational optimization, and the promotion of SAF to reduce aviation's environmental impact. Through initiatives like the Green Fares program, the Lufthansa Group is leading the way in making air travel more sustainable for future generations.
