Londoners protest against increased events in Victoria Park in 2024: what caused dissatisfaction
Residents of London are protesting against the decision of Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman and his cabinet to increase the number of events in Victoria Park from 10 to 12 a year. Activists believe that this change will only worsen the lives of the neighborhood's residents.
According to MyLondon, the mayor stated that he was compelled to rent the park to increase budget funding. However, more than 150 people disagreed with this method of earning money.
It is expected that during these 12 days when events will be held in Victoria Park, the capacity will increase from 5 to 20 thousand people.
Some Londoners believe that this will eventually lead to an increase in noise, traffic, waste, and pollution in the area. Residents of the capital demand that the council consult with stakeholders and reach a common solution that suits everyone.
The petition, which has already been signed by almost 200 people, reads: "This is a terrible idea that will destroy our park, our neighborhood, and our environment... We cannot allow this to happen. We must defend our park, our rights, and our voice. We are in favor of keeping the number of large events as they are, with all the mitigating measures for residents."
Residents were also outraged that they would have fewer days to spend in the park with their children.
At the same time, activists were assured that the increase in the number of events would have a positive impact on local businesses and expand the range of recreational opportunities.
